SSH

Ask your server questions in AI chat

“Is last night’s backup there?” “What errors is the site logging?” — without opening a terminal.

Advisable.AI connects over SSH to your own Linux or Unix server, for example the VPS that runs your website or online store, and reads folders and files over SFTP. By default it runs no commands and writes nothing. If you need to, one setting on the connection enables both commands and text-file writes: every action first appears as a preview, and the AI asks for your approval before running it.

What you can do

Folders at a glance

Up to 500 files and subfolders per folder, with type, size, permissions and modification date. Handy to check that a backup or an export was created.

Read files

Text, configuration and log files, up to 128 KB per call, continuing through larger files. Binary files are reported without their content.

File details

Type, size, permissions, owner (uid/gid), modification date and full path of a file, folder or symlink.

Connection check

Verifies the server key and shows the account, fingerprint, home folder and whether SFTP is available.

Commands (optional)

One command line per approval, without a terminal, with a time limit of up to 120 seconds. Interactive programs and sudo password prompts are not supported. You see the exact command before it runs.

Write a file (optional)

A new text file of up to 48,000 characters; an existing file is replaced only if you explicitly ask. You see the whole content before it is written.

Example questions

Use them as they are — or in your own words.

›Is last night’s backup in the /backups folder? How big is it?
›Read the end of the site’s error log and tell me which error keeps repeating.
›Which files in the uploads folder changed today?
›Show me the nginx configuration for the site.
›Run df -h and tell me whether the disk is close to full. I'll see the command before it runs.

The tools it gives Claude

Reading uses SFTP only, with no commands. The command and write tools exist only if you enable them on the connection.

  • Connection status, fingerprint and SFTP availability
  • List a folder (up to 500 files and subfolders)
  • File or folder details
  • Read a file in chunks of up to 128 KB
  • Optional: one command line with a preview and confirmation
  • Optional: write a text file with a preview and confirmation

Add the workspace MCP to ChatGPT or Claude once. Advisable.AI gives each user access to their own and explicitly shared connections across supported systems.

How it connects

1

On the server, create a dedicated user for Advisable.AI with as few permissions as possible, not root. Prefer a key: run ssh-keygen -t ed25519 and add the public key to the user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.

2

In Advisable.AI, open Connections → New connection → SSH / SFTP, enter the server, port, user and key or password, and test the connection. The test runs no commands. Compare the recorded fingerprint with the server’s own.

3

With an active workspace subscription, buy a connection slot for €10 before VAT. Then ask from AI Chat, or add the workspace MCP to ChatGPT or Claude. Commands stay off until you enable them.

Frequently asked

What kind of server do I need?+

A Linux or Unix server with SSH and SFTP, reachable from the internet through a public hostname or public IP. Private, internal and reserved addresses are refused. If a firewall is in place, the SSH port must accept connections from the Advisable.AI server; ask us for its address.

Can it change anything on the server?+

Not by default: reading uses SFTP only and no command runs. If you enable commands and file writes, every action must first be previewed and the AI asks for your explicit approval. The confirmation code works once, for that exact action, for 10 minutes. A command is never retried automatically.

Why a dedicated user and not root?+

A command runs with all the SSH user’s permissions. With a restricted user, even a mistaken command that was approved cannot reach what you do not allow. The write tool does not delete, rename or change file permissions; a command can, which is why you see it before it runs.

What is the server fingerprint?+

The fingerprint of the server’s key. If you leave it blank, it is recorded on the first successful test and you compare it with the output of ssh-keygen -lf /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key.pub on the server. If it changes later, the connection stops before authentication until you update it.

Where are the key and password kept?+

In Advisable.AI, encrypted (AES-256-GCM). The private key is never shown again in the form and never reaches Claude or ChatGPT. Error messages contain no passwords, keys or server diagnostics.

Can I use it in Routines?+

No. The SSH connection is not available in Routines. Use it from AI Chat, or from ChatGPT and Claude through MCP.
